Can you figure out the context of this quote? Maybe it'll earn you an insightful... I was sitting in a chair and he said push your butt as far as you can toward me. My cheek was on a pillow. It took about 20 minutes. -A

Each day I spend in this city, I am more convinced that city squirrels here are Darwinning their way closer and closer to humans. Maybe I never paid them much mind before I spent time living in the city, but the counrty squirrels just don't seem the same. A couple examples: I live on the third floor of a brick building. Last summer, I had an air conditioner on the window of my bedroom. I also got a incredibly mischievious kitty. After I had left one day, my boyfriend was still sound a...

She’d only been gone only a short time. To me it seemed forever. It was at least long enough that I feared I’d forget what her voice sounded like any day. I was stubborn, though, and angry, even bitter. Not him though. I thought he was naïve to still have hope. I’d given up soon after her short-lived effort died. Somehow he never did. Naivety, I thought. This time, she answered. My heart jumped. I pushed it back down quickly so he wouldn’t notice. Trying to be inconspicuous I s...

Suspeckted's latest article Adopting the Feminist Label reminded me of a conversation I overheard between two women in their 20s and a 5th grade book order. It's random enough, I know, but they do relate. Thanks for the inspiration Suspeckted. I'll start with the women in their 20s. I was half taking part in a conversation about movies. The old what's good what's bad thing. As I was drifting off, I heard the title Kill Bill . Both women agreed that they didn't like the movie. The...

Since the beginning of the school year, the teacher that is suppose to be my mentor has been running her classroom like I imagine basic training for the US military (no I haven't been through it, but she did show a video to the class!). It's been riddled with punitive consequences, usually unrelated to the offense. She calls the team leaders, herself and the pricipal terms that relate to the hierarchy of the military. I could go on and on, but I think last week I talked enough about it. ...

Gaiman, Neil. Illustrations by Dave McKean. The Wolves in the Walls . Harper Collins. 2003. The eerily decorated jacket and pitch black endpapers, along with just the title The Wolves in the Walls, attracted me to this book. Each page looks as if it has been pasted together using multiple mediums in a charmingly awkward way. The dark and mismatched illustrations work to create a haunting atmosphere of suspense. Even the words on each page are sized and arranged in an uncomfortable way…...

Where to land when the only thing significant is the feeling of grass on your skin Noticing one feature of an infinite amount Seeking the passing breeze for its moment, the moment For a covering of water Loving the drying drips for the way the beads roll Knowing their tracks leave burns To fall off the roof And know the feeling of the pavement But love the comfort between here and there To be frozen in one part of something Longer Waiting for the summer's rays

I find this humorous. This weekend, my brother and his good friend, a firefighter, went a meeting of the republicans in their city. They had recieved the tickets for free from the fire department and decided it would be at least an interesting experience. Before sitting down, they were looking around at the stands that were set up selling Bush gear. There was a sales woman, like many, trying to get them to buy a shirt. They said no twice, and she continued. (I'm not ripping on her b...

Something that Marcie Helen said reminded me of a conversation I had with my lead teacher. We were talking about the changing demographics in the area that this school is located. Ten or so years ago, most of the school's population was African American. Now, it's about 1/3 Hispanic, 1/6 African American and 1/2 Caucasian. My point is coming now. She said she liked the old demographics better. I just listened. She went on to explain herself. She said she liked it because African A...

For the last two weeks before school started this fall, I was sent as a student teacher to an elementary school. I didn't have a choice which school or grade I would be assigned to. It was luck of the draw. I ended up in a fifth grade class room. I had two weeks alone with the techer before the students would arrive. In those two weeks, I saw only the tip of what was to come. In the first half hour, I found out that my lead teacher is ex-military. She is a republican...far right Chri...

After journaling for years in pen, pencil, crayon, and whatever else there was, I can't write on paper anymore. The desire is gone, and worse, it makes me get the same feeling that I used to when I was home sick from school watching ET for the 100th time. This wasn't sudden. This has been coming on for two years or so. My journal sits next to my bed. It used to sit on the top shelf of the stand I have there, when I used to write in it all the time. Like most, I think, I used it to w...
